Living with Pain: Fear

A Discussion with Heather Carter

6pm UK, 1pm ECT, 10am Pacific

This is the fifth in a series of discussions homing in on one of the common themes emerging from a recent group in which we shared our individual experiences of chronic pain. Giving ourselves permission to speak openly about this often hidden subject proved to be therapeutic. Simply tapping whilst talking, listening and being part of an empathetic group with similar issues gave us a sense of release which was reflected in a reduction in the perception of pain in our bodies.

Fear can get locked into our perception of pain because so many of us try to stifle it, but those thoughts continue to rise unbidden: What does the future hold? How long will I have to live with this? How long CAN I live with this? Will there never be any relief? Will it get worse, until I can't bear it any longer? What then? How long will I be able to care for myself and others? Is there something more sinister underlying my pain? And so on and so on. For many there is also a sense of frustration, with the system, with doctors and hospitals and mainstream medicine, as well as, for some, particularly practitioners, a sense of failure if we have to resort to pharmaceuticals or surgery. We can forget that our practice is complementary, not alternative. Let's talk.
