Living with Pain: Guilt

A Discussion with Heather Carter

6pm UK, 1pm ECT, 10am Pacific

This is the fourth in a series of discussions homing in on one of the common themes emerging from a recent group in which we shared our individual experiences of chronic pain. Giving ourselves permission to speak openly about this often hidden subject proved to be therapeutic. Simply tapping whilst talking, listening and being part of an empathetic group with similar issues gave us a sense of release which was reflected in a reduction in the perception of pain in our bodies.

Today we'll be sharing the feelings of the guilt that thrive in our self-talk: What have I done / not done in my life / to my body to cause myself this pain? And the guilt feeds the sound track of self criticism: a raft of perceived failings or misdemeaners, or even karma; a sense that in some way I don't even recognise, I am responsible for this pain: it's my fault and other people will suffer because I can't do everything I should be able to do and ought to be able to do. Maybe shining a light on these shared feelings can open the way to self compassion?

Visit the Living with Pain Support Page to continue the discussion.
